A remarkable time capsule from the wreckage of the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet. This naturally formed conglomerate preserves several objects from the wreck together exactly as they came to rest beneath the sea more than three centuries ago.
At its center is a heavily encrusted iron spike, accompanied by a Spanish colonial 8 Reales silver cob, a 2 Reales cob, and a fragment of period pottery, all fused together by centuries of marine concretion.
Rather than representing a single recovered coin, this artifact preserves an entire miniature archaeological assemblage from the wreck site. The relationship between the spike, silver coinage, pottery, shells, and marine growth makes the piece an extraordinary physical record of the environment in which the fleet's remains rested for centuries.
