An original 1808 East India Company coin recovered from the wreck of the Admiral Gardner, one of the best-known British East Indiaman shipwrecks of the early 19th century.
The Admiral Gardner was carrying a substantial shipment of newly struck East India Company coinage intended for circulation in British India when she was lost in January 1809 during a violent storm in the English Channel.
The cargo remained beneath the sea for generations before archaeological and commercial salvage brought thousands of the ship's coins back to the surface. The coin's darkened surface and marine character provide a tangible connection to more than a century and a half beneath the sea.
