Lot BFA-003
This is the socket form of the same object: a cast bronze cylinder without a cast handle, intended to be mounted on a wooden stock or set into a rail. The ribbed body gave the casting strength where the charge sat.
Green oxidation of this depth takes centuries to form and is the first thing to look at on a piece like this. It runs into the ribs and around the mouth in the way corrosion does when it grows slowly and undisturbed, rather than the flat, uniform colour of an applied finish.
Objects of this kind rarely survive complete. Most were scrapped and recast; the ones that remain came out of the ground, and they carry the marks of it.
