Own an authentic piece of Spanish colonial history from the height of the Age of Piracy.
These original Spanish maravedis date from the 1500s–1600s, a period when Spanish coinage circulated throughout Spain and its expanding overseas empire. Maravedis were everyday currency during the same centuries that saw Spanish treasure fleets, privateers, buccaneers, and the rise of piracy throughout the Atlantic and Caribbean.
Many examples display fascinating original and later countermarks, mint symbols, numerals, crosses, castles, lions, dates, and other identifiable details from their long period of circulation.
Each coin is genuinely old and unique. Because these are authentic circulated coins, the exact shape, patina, strike, visible markings, and level of preservation will vary from coin to coin.
Low-denomination Spanish maravedis were the everyday “change” of their era. While silver reales and gold escudos carried large amounts of wealth aboard Spanish treasure fleets, maravedis represented the smaller-denomination currency used in ordinary transactions throughout the Spanish world.
They offer an affordable way to own a genuine coin from the same centuries associated with Spanish treasure fleets and the Golden Age of Piracy.
Genuine period coins drawn from old holdings and private collections.
Uncleaned and as found; each coin individually unique.
Guaranteed authentic to the period stated, without time limit.
