An exceptional 16th–17th century bronze “thunder mug” or signal cannon, recovered in Peru. These compact, heavy bronze pieces were designed to produce an extremely loud report when charged with gunpowder and were historically used for signaling, ceremonial, and celebratory purposes.
This example has an especially dramatic history preserved directly in the artifact. The body bears deeply carved initials, while the rear displays a large blow-through rupture from an apparent historic explosion or catastrophic discharge. The force tore through the bronze around the breech, leaving striking physical evidence of the tremendous pressures these small cannons could generate.
Centuries of oxidation have produced a heavy dark bronze surface with areas of blue-green patination. The carved initials, original surface, and dramatic breech damage remain clearly visible.
This is a particularly evocative early colonial artifact. Unlike a typical surviving thunder mug, the catastrophic damage appears to preserve the aftermath of what may have been its final firing.
