A fascinating 16th–17th century bronze “thunder mug” or signal cannon found in Peru, distinguished by an unusual group of five punched circular marks arranged in the form of a cross.
The five deliberate punches create a simple cross-shaped design around the upper portion of the body, giving this example a unique decorative or identifying feature not typically encountered on otherwise utilitarian pieces.
Thunder mugs were heavy bronze devices charged with gunpowder to create an exceptionally loud report. They were historically used for signaling, ceremonial events, celebrations, and similar purposes.
This example retains a dark, heavily aged bronze surface with areas of mineralization and wear accumulated over centuries. The five-hole cross motif remains readily visible and makes this an especially distinctive display piece.
